Houtou is originaly the name of the thick and flat noodle made from wheat. It is cooked in miso: soy bean paste, based soup with lots of vegetables in season, such as pumpkins, carrots. radishes and mushrooms. It is good to eat especially in cold season because the hot noodles make our body warm. It is easy to cook at home, I cook it about once a month in the winter season. The taste is mild, therefore it can be enjoyed by everybody, from children to elder people. It costs about 1,000 yen. The price will be slightly changed depending on the adding of the meat and so on. Kosaku is a famous Houtou restaurant. There is one on the South side of the Kofu station and another one on the North side.

“Inden” are deerskin handicrafts which have a history of more than 400 years. When we look back on Japan’s history of deerskin products with specific designs, we can find Inden handicrafts were used for making a letter box(a national tresure owned by Todaiji temple) in Nara period (710--794) and gorgeously decorated armors and helmets of war lords in the warring state period(1467—about one hundred years later). In the Edo period our distant ancestor Uehara Yushichi(present chairman is his 13th-generation descendant) invented his own method to silk-screen a tanned deerskin with Japanese lacquer in Kosyu, or Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan. Kosyu-Inden is said to have officially started the business history at that time.The upper classes of those days highly valued handicrafts made in this method, such as purses, tobacco pouches and coin purses. Since then the said Inden method has been handed down only by mouth to the head named Uehara Yushichi of each descendand family as their secret family treasure. That is certainly because they continued with the untiring studies and succession oh their skills. A tanned deerskin is dyed black, navy blue, brown,wine color or dark red and is coarsely cut. After that the deerskin is put under a paper pattern (made of Japanese paper with a specific design) and is silk- screened with Japanese lacquer.Finally it is dried in a special drying room for several days. The deerskin of Inden handicrafts is light, soft and durable. As time passes, it keeps a harmonious balance with lacquer and thus makes the color more vivid. Therefore, the more you use Inden handicrafts, the more feel such features as their own touch and flexibility.
I think that's KIKYOUYA SHINGENMOCHI... Shingenmochi is three small piece of rice cakes with KINAKO and sweet honey syrups. KINAKO is soybean flour. Very delicious. Rice cake is similar for Japanese and rice is staple food. Enjoy Yamanashi SHINGENMOCHI

Kurodama is one of the local confectionary made in Yamanasi. We guess the naminng Kurodama comes from the color and shape 'This is what-we-call Japanese style sweets with unique shape like black golf ball, and smoothly mild taste. 'Kurodama is made from both kideny beans and black sugar excellent. Once you try it, you will be a fun of this sweets. We can buy this at Sawadaya shops . They are father of Kurodama and have several shops in Yamanasi. Why don't you try it..!
The main ingredients are the grapes named Kosyu that is the oldest sort in Japan and has been grown in Katsunuma since 1186. People eat Kosyu raw. But now it is unpopular due to lack of sweetness. The farmers have replaced it with other high-end types of grapes like Kaiji and Kyoho. In recent years, therefore, people found a suitable material for wine in Kosyu. Kosyu has gained popularity for wineries and there was a shortage of Kosyu in Yamanashi this year. |
